Liposuction
Also known as Lipo · Lipoplasty · Body Contouring
Liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes localised deposits of fat from specific areas of the body that are resistant to diet and exercise. Using a thin hollow tube called a cannula, the surgeon dislodges and suctions out fat cells to improve body contour and proportion. It is a body contouring tool — not a weight loss solution.

Am I a Good Candidate?
Liposuction may be appropriate for those who:
- Are in good overall physical health and within a reasonable range of their target weight
- Are a non-smoker, or willing to cease smoking at least 4–6 weeks prior to surgery
- Have localised, stubborn fat deposits that do not respond to diet and exercise
- Have good skin elasticity — skin needs to be able to contract and conform to the new body contour
- Have realistic expectations about the degree of contouring achievable
What to Expect — The Procedure
Small incisions are made at the treatment site, tumescent fluid is injected to reduce bleeding, and fat is suctioned via cannula. There are safety limits on the volume of fat that can be removed in a single session — most surgeons adhere to a maximum of approximately 5 litres of aspirate per session.
Pre-operative Care
- Cease smoking at least 4–6 weeks prior to surgery
- Avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements (aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, vitamin E) for 2 weeks before surgery
- Inform your surgeon of all current medications, allergies, and medical conditions
- Arrange for a responsible adult to accompany you and assist you for the first 24–48 hours
- Prepare your recovery space in advance — loose comfortable clothing, extra pillows, easy access to essentials
- Maintain a stable weight in the weeks leading up to surgery
The following are general guidelines only. Your assigned surgeon will provide personalised pre and post-operative instructions during your consultation.
Post-operative Care
- Wear any prescribed compression garment as directed — typically 4–6 weeks
- Avoid submerging incisions in water until your surgeon confirms the wounds are fully healed
- Attend all scheduled follow-up appointments for wound checks and progress assessment
- Avoid strenuous activity, heavy lifting, and vigorous exercise until cleared by your surgeon
- Some fluid drainage from the small incision points in the first 24–48 hours is normal
- Avoid vigorous exercise and activities that raise body temperature significantly for at least 3–4 weeks
- Light walking from Day 1 is encouraged to reduce the risk of blood clots
When to Call Your Surgeon
- High fever (above 38.3°C / 101°F)
- Sudden or rapidly increasing pain not relieved by prescribed medication
- Excessive bleeding or unusual discharge from the incision site
- Sudden swelling in one leg noticeably different from the other — may indicate a blood clot
- Contour irregularities or hardening of a treated area that develops suddenly and is accompanied by pain
- Signs of allergic reaction — skin rash, severe itching, swelling, or difficulty breathing
